From June 2026, new UK data protection requirements have come into force following the implementation of provisions within the Data (Use and Access) Act. While these changes don’t require businesses to completely rewrite their privacy policies, they do mean many organisations should review and update them to ensure they remain compliant.
What’s Changed?
The most significant change for many businesses is the introduction of clearer requirements around data protection complaints. Privacy policies should now explain how individuals can raise a complaint directly with your organisation before contacting the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Businesses are also expected to acknowledge complaints within 30 days and respond without undue delay.
In addition, organisations should review their privacy notices to ensure they accurately reflect:
- The personal data they collect.
- Why the data is collected and the lawful basis for processing.
- How long information is retained.
- Who personal data is shared with.
- The rights available to individuals.
- Clear contact details for data protection enquiries and complaints.
